A new future for the Trinity River
For many months, the Trinity River Corridor Citizens Committee
carefully studied the Trinity River corridor and its potential
for becoming a civic treasure. Finally, in 1996, that committee
unveiled its vision for transforming the segment of the river
traversing the city of Dallas.
The recommendations in that report were adopted unanimously
by the Dallas City Council. They then became the framework for
the city’s 1998 bond program approved by voters. Included in
that bond package -- $246 million in improvements to the river
corridor.
That initial report has since been refined, resulting in A
Balanced Vision Plan for the Trinity River Corridor,
released in 2003.
The creation of the Trinity Commons Foundation
The 1996 report also stated that "a structural organization
must be created to support open-space dedication and nurture
the growth of the programs and projects necessary to manifest
the TRCCC vision".
That organization is the Trinity Commons Foundation. We selected
the name Trinity Commons to symbolize the river as a common
meeting place for all of Dallas.
Sustaining the vision for the river
The Trinity Commons Foundation works with other
local groups to ensure the vision so carefully
crafted for the Trinity River becomes a reality. We maintain
an active committee structure and conduct periodic public meetings
throughout the city both to inform and to listen.
Our fundamental goal – to ensure that funding, both private
and public, is equal to the needs of this well-designed project,
a project that will respect and improve the environment and
provide full access and enjoyment of the Trinity River Corridor
for generations to come.
